Something You Should Try This Weekend…
This week I visited Belga Cafe, which is well beyond its years on the Hill. The veteran role this restaurant plays in the SE neighborhood dining scene makes it seem like its been here since at least the 70’s. The restaurant celebrates its 10 year Anniversary this year on the 8th street SE corridor, which has blossomed into a dining destination. Ten years ago catching a cab on 8th street SE was damn near impossible and now you can hardly find a parking space from all the foot and car traffic. Belga Cafe is one of those places on the Hill that you have to try for brunch since their waffles have been the talk of the town for years. This week they brought back a couple of their originals.
Because DC was not ready for this 10 years ago, the restaurant is giving another go on their Sweet Asparagus Beignets. Yes, asparagus and beignets pair well together especially when they are combined with powdered sugar and Belga’s house-made violet syrup. This was even a shock to my food senses when the restaurant paired the beignets with green asparagus ice cream. Despite the culture shock to the senses, I am intrigued. The District is more than ready for this Belga. Bring it on. #HappyAnniversary
