Care for a Rub, Anyone?

DJ Paul's BBQ Rub

When actors, musicians and the like transcend into the food world, I often question whether this is truly a passion or simply another way to make more money.  My major reservation is mostly because, like some folks in my life, these artists take a brief liking to the food profession and then fall off the bandwagon when they’re not leading the show.  I appreciate consistency which is why I was able to take DJ Paul’s new venture in the food world totally serious.  DJ Paul, of the 2006 Oscar winning group Three Six Mafia and winner of The Lemon Basket restaurant on VH1, has placed his Memphis roots in bottle sized portions of BBQ rubs and sauces.

Simply opening the bottle of BBQ rub initiated a brainstorming of ways to use the spices.  Garlic, salt, pepper and more pepper are the top contenders in this BBQ rub.  The 11 spices and herbs separate the rub from the typical seasoning salt you might find in your local grocery store by mixing salt, spice and smoky flavor into a 2 oz. bottle.  The seasonings make the preparation time for grilling seem less daunting if you’re like me and want a quick fix but deep smoky flavor on my food.  My initial vision led me to chicken, BBQ ribs and shrimp but my creativity led me to believe asparagus, sautéed spinach and grilled octopus could due for a round of this seasoning.

With the summertime looking like a distant reality, now is a good time to experiment with combinations and flavors before the grilling season truly begins.  With half the work already done in this spice rub, looks like summer grilling time just got cut in half.
