Monday Roundup
New Ways to Brunch (& Lunch)
J&G Steakhouse Style Series: This Saturday, October 22, 2011 (*11:30 am), the restaurant will pair with Urban Chic to host “Chic While Showing”. The show will feature ways to toss the boring maternity look for more stylish trends for the expecting mom. The two-course brunch is $30 and includes the fashion show and a gift bag. Get your tickets here.
Taberna del Alabardero Paella Sundays: If you are a paella lover, then I suggest you run, not walk, over to Taberna. They offer eight different paellas during their Sunday lunch for $22 per person. After witnessing first hand the paella making process here, I can assure you this is the best and freshest paella you will find in the District. My top picks are the Paella de Carrillera y Queso Manchego (*Pork cheek, veggies, Manchego cheese rice) and Arroz Abanda (*Mussels, Scallops, Shrimp and Langostines Paella).
New Menus
SAX has revamped its menu. I recommend this spot for a date night or a night out with some of your fave seen and be seen New York crowd, they’ll feel right at home. The deep red velvet and gold accent interior immerses you fully in the restaurant while removing you from the bustling Downtown DC scene. Executive Chef Jonathan Seningen has created a menu full of local ingredients and has spun off of traditional favorites. The Shenandoah Lamb and the Apple “Conversation” were my choices for the evening and I must say it was not a bad decision especially during this time of the year. The cabaret performers are a nice touch to the already mesmerizing interior design. A night on the town comes to mind when recommending to someone new to the D.C scene.
Zengo marries the cuisines of Japan and Peru. After visiting the fusion restaurant last week for an event showcasing Macchu Pisco, I realize the main reason I enjoy Zengo. Zengo is not afraid to play with different flavors and combinations. Just like its neighboring store, Urban Outfitters, the restaurant takes risks specifically where they were able to make Pisco a suitable substitute to your typical wine pairing. Honestly, the restaurants Rainbow Ceviche may have converted me to a ceviche lover where it lacked the soggy texture and bland combinations that are typical of the ceviche I have had in my day. See the taste of Lima-Tokyo menu here.
Food Education
Michael Pollan, food writer for The New York Times, will speak at the Strathmore on October 26, 2011 (*8 pm). The acclaimed “liberal foodie intellectual” will discuss flaws of nutritionism and the industrialization of the food industry.
Learn how to make fresh cheese and how to put together a fresh cheese plate at Ripple this weekend. The restaurant is hosting a cheese class (*$40) this Sunday, October 23, 2011 (*3:30 pm-5 pm).
