Food.Fun.Stuff: Summer Love, Had Me a Blast…

[ 0 ] May 6, 2009 |

With the weather getting consistently warmer (*Well this week hasn’t been that consistent for the District…), the time is nearing for those summer plans. These economic conditions have limited the usual summer vacays everyone plans for the summer in hopes of getting out of the city. Luckily, the District might not be such a bad place to spend those summer days and evenings where there are an array of events that will be circulating throughout the city and surrounding areas. In keeping with the tradition of JKGF, we are here to report to you first about the happenings and not happenings;-) So here it goes, the Top Five Places you need to be this summer:

1. National Harbor– The National Harbor is going to be the new hangout spot for many with new restaurants, shopping and hotels springing up everyday. It is becoming its own little city. With a Yacht show (May 29-31), a Food and Wine Festival (June 6 & 7) and the Sunset Concert Series (*Check out the site for show times) there will be plenty for patrons to get into at the Harbor.

2. The Wharf– We know, we suck. We, a foodie website in the District, discovered only recently the D.C. Wharf in Southwest. We have officially found a true love:-) Seafood, seafood and more seafood is what you will find at the wharf. It is one of the last open air markets of its kind with most of the fish caught from the Atlantic Ocean and the crabs coming from the Chesapeake Bay. Make some deals and you can go home with 3 dozen crabs for $25, Nice. Grab some beers and lay out the newspaper, it’s going to be a long summer night of crab picking…

3. The Beer, Bourbon and Barbecue Festival– Back to the National Harbor we go. This festival will feature 60 types of bourbon, 40 different beers and barbecue. Sounds like a good time to us. It will also feature a mechanical bull (*Some wild, wild fun!) It’s all happening on June 20 from 12-6 pm @ 137 National Plaza, National Harbor. Tickets range from $20-$40.

4. The National Asian Heritage Festival– Sugar cane juices, live acts and cooking demonstrations. These are a few of the things that will bring a huge crowd together on Pennsylvania Avenue on May 16. This event is FREE so there’s a major incentive to dragging yourself out between 3rd and 6th streets for bulgogi and halo-ha-lo:-) Stop thru from 11 am-7 pm and you might learn something new!

5. Wine Festival– So how many wine festivals can a District resident take?? As many as they decide to bring to the area;-) It looks like there’s a wine festival everytime you blink your eyes in this area, but this is mainly due to the multiple wineries that take up Virginia’s massive land. 50 wineries will be showcasing their merlots, cab’s and pinot’s. There will be live funk and blues. This will make an exciting weekend for May 30 & 31 from 11 am to 6 pm.

Now that you have your agenda down pact, it’s time to shop for those threads…Shall we start with Meeps for some vintage??
